Several parts of the fort have been restored by the Greek Archaeological Service and other parts are still on the nomination to be restored with the help of an EU subsidy. Important buildings are the Byzantine castle, the Byzantine church Agia Sophia, the church of St. Charalambos and the church of Panagia Eleistria.

The castle of Koroni is a former fort, a Byzantine fortress built in the 6th and 7th centuries n. Chr. on the remnants of the historic town of Asini. In 1206 the Venetians conquered the fortress and they built it further into a mighty fortress, they called the fort Coron.

In 1500 the Turkish sultan Bayezid captured the castle, followed by the siege of Coron and in 1687 the Venetians reconquered the fortress. In 1715 the Turks took possession of it and only in 1828 with the help of the French General Maison, the complex became Greek property again. After all that violence there is now a peaceful rest.

Although texts like “Orthodoxy or death” can be seen in appropriate clothing (arms and legs covered) the monastery is largely viewed from inside. The nuns are hospitable and sell crosses and herbs.

The fortress is situated high above the city and can be reached from the harbor via the characteristic narrow streets of Koroni. You can enter through the large gate. There is a magnificent view from the castle.

Within the walls of the castle of Koroni are some houses, a church and a nunnery (1918) located. The monastery is called Agios Ioannis Prodromos, it is a women’s monastery with several monastery gardens.

In the monastery is the highest point of the castle where there is also a cross. From here you can take beautiful pictures.
