Het karakteristieke plaatsje Pylos ligt in de Baai van Navarino.
In de baai ligt als een rotsachtige drempel het onbewoonde eiland Sfaktiria.

De Zeeslag bij Navarino of Slag in de Baai van Navarino op 20 oktober 1827 bracht een beslissende wending in de Griekse vrijheidsstrijd. Het was de laatste grote zeeslag die uitsluitend met zeilschepen werd bevochten. Deze Bevrijdingsdag viert Pylos nog elk jaar.

Deze historische zeeslag vond plaats tussen de geallieerden (Britten, Russen en Fransen) en de Turks-Egyptische vloot. De slag werd door de geallieerden gewonnen die aan de zijde van de Grieken vochten. Op het grote plein van Pylos staat een monument van de drie admiraals die deze slag wonnen. Onder hen was een Nederlander; Lodewijk van Heiden, die de leiding had van de Russische vloot.

De huidige stad Pylos heette in de middeleeuwen Navaríno.

Het Neokastro (“Nieuw Fort”) aan het zuideinde van de Baai van Pylos (of Baai van Navarino) is in 1573 gebouwd door de Turken, en was tussen 1686 en 1715 in Venetiaanse handen
Vanaf Pylos zie je aan de linkerkant het langwerpige eiland Sfaktiria. Op het eiland zijn meerdere monumenten van soldaten (Brits, Russisch en Frans monument) die tijdens de slag hier gesneuveld zijn.

In de haven van Pylos staat naast het parkeerterrein een bruin houten huisje .
Je kunt hier een boot huren; €40-50 voor 6 uur (€60 voor de hele dag) (excl bezinekosten; reken op € 10 voor een halve dag).

The Naval Battle at Navarino or Battle in the Bay of Navarino on October 20, 1827 brought a decisive turn in the Greek freedom struggle. It was the last major naval battle that was fought exclusively with sailing ships. This Liberation Day celebrates every year Pylos .

This historic naval battle took place between the Allies (British, Russian and French) and the Turkish-Egyptian fleet. The battle was won by the Allies who fought on the side of the Greeks. On the main square of Pylos is a monument of the three admirals who won this battle. Among them was a Dutchman; Lodewijk van Heiden, who was in charge of the Russian fleet.

The current city of Pylos was called Navaríno in the Middle Ages.
