Greek cuisine is considered one of the healthiest,
because the diet mainly consists of fish, olive oil, seafood, vegetables, legumes and lean meat.

You will probably have breakfast “at home” on the terrace with delicious fresh bread and fresh orange juice. The nearest supermarket, bakery and butcher are in Finikounda and Methoni, where everything is available. There is a small supermarket near the church in Evangelismos.

Greeks rarely take the time to have an extensive breakfast. A coffee (frappe) and a cheese tart (tiropita) or a sesame roll (koulouri, a ring-shaped roll of dough and sesame seeds) is sufficient. It is the least important meal of the day.

There is a good chance that you will have lunch along the way. The Greeks have lunch around 2:00-3:00 PM. We often have a delicious Greek salad with 1 meze, tzatziki and bread. It is not strange in Greece to order 1 dish and 2 plates/cutlery.

Around 4 p.m. it is wonderful to have a drink and order mezedes.
Mezedes, also called Greek tapas, are small hot or cold snacks. They are usually eaten as a starter, but they can also be eaten as a side dish with the main meal. The fun thing, and common in Greece, is sharing these snacks with your table companions. We often order the mezedes from the house, then you get a plate with what they have at that moment, and that can be very surprising.

Of course you can cook and BBQ at home (there is a gas BBQ available), but we know from experience that most people often go out to eat. Not only for fun, but it is also nice and cheap!

Greeks take plenty of time for the evening meal, which is considered the most important and often starts very late in the evening (10 p.m.).

Most restaurants open at 6:30 PM, so if you eat that early you will often be alone or alone with foreigners.
Start with a starter (mezedes), even then it is not strange if you place the dishes in the middle and enjoy them together.
In the Netherlands, Greek food is known for its meat, but in Greece itself we eat fresh fish more often.

Eating out is one of the favorite activities of the Greek, but he will never do this alone. A meal is a social event and a pleasant get-together for the Greeks. Exuberant, loud conversation while eating and sometimes even with the television on is simply part of a Greek meal.

Dessert is usually not on the menu. After you have asked for the bill, a bowl of watermelon (karpoezi) is placed on the table, or yogurt with honey (yaourti me meli), or portokalia me mawrodafni, a dessert based on oranges and Greek red dessert wine. Sometimes you are also offered an ouzo.

Well-known desserts are baklava, galaktoboureko, melomakarona: honey cookies with walnuts and revani: cake with syrup
and are often eaten in the afternoon.

In every town you will find several taverns and restaurants with local specialties, too many to mention.
Check the chalkboards for the special of the day or ask for it.
There is live music regularly, especially on Saturdays, which is also usually stated on the chalkboards.
