Mistras of Mystras is een van de interessantste plaatsen van Peloponnesos en is zeker de moeite waard om deze te bezoeken.

Mistras is de belangrijkste en meest representatieve voorbeeld van een Byzantijnse stad.
Mistras ligt 5 km ten noord westen van Sparta in het departement Lakonia. Deze voormalige hoofdstad van de Morea is het belangrijkste en meest representatieve voorbeeld van een Byzantijnse stad van de 14e en 15e eeuw die er is. Morea is een vroegere naam voor de Peloponnesos. Het is nu een wonderbare spookstad, gelegen in een schitterend landschap. Vooral in het voorjaar is het prachtig doordat de hele natuur dan in bloei staat.

De stad bestaat eigenlijk uit 3 delen.
Op de top van een heuvel, een uitloper van het Taygetos gebergte, werd op 620 meter hoogte een kasteel of de Frankische vesting gebouwd met uitzicht op Sparta. Dit sterke fort van Mystras werd gebouwd om Sparta beter te kunnen verdedigen.

Enkele belangrijke monumenten: Het paleis van de Despoot halverwege de helling met de Nafplion-Poort, de kerk van Aghia Sophia, de Kathedraal, de smalle kerk van de maagd Evangelistria met fresco’s, het Vrontocheion klooster bestaande uit 2 kerken (Theodori en Hodegetria) en een aantal kloostergebouwen, Peribleptos klooster aan de rand van de klif tegen de grot en onder de rotsmuur, de toegangspoorten zoals de Monemvasiapoort, oude steegjes, de restanten van het kasteel en de vestingmuren en het Archeologisch Museum (bij de Metropolis).

De Metropolis is een basiliek gebouwd tussen 1291 en 1292, de basiliek is gewijd aan St. Dimitrios. Het gebouw heeft verschillende bouwstijlen maar de buitenzijde wordt wel gezien als kenmerkend voor de Helleense architectuur uit de tweede helft van de 10^de eeuw.

Het Pantanassa Klooster ligt op een steile helling en is het enige bewoonde klooster in Mystras. Het klooster is toegankelijk en heeft een stijlvol interieur.

Tips & afstanden:

Het beste is om je auto boven neer te zetten en daar te beginnen bij de Frankische burcht tot aan het Pantanassa klooster. Dan teruglopen en met je auto naar beneden rijden en het onderste gedeelte bezoeken.

Trek er ruim de tijd voor uit (zeker 3 uur) en neem wat te eten en te drinken mee, want eenmaal binnen is er alleen maar water uit een automaat te verkrijgen (en die kan wel eens leeg zijn).

De route van Gythio naar Mistras is verrassend mooi!

Het museum van de Olijf en Griekse Olijfolie: in Sparta, op maar 5 km van Mistras, een klein maar interessant en modern museum, waar je voor € 4 in een uurtje de geschiedenis van de olijf en de olijfolie leert kennen met authentieke illustraties en interactieve schermen, ideaal voor een bezoekje op een hete namiddag of een regenachtige dag! Er is ook een klein winkeltje.

Mistras is the most important and representative example of a Byzantine city.
Mistras is located 5 km north west of Sparta in the Lakonia department. This former capital of the Morea is the most important and representative example of a Byzantine city of the 14th and 15th centuries that exists. Morea is a former name for the Peloponnese. It is now a wonderful ghost town, situated in a beautiful landscape. Especially in the spring it is beautiful because then all nature is in bloom.

The city actually consists of 3 parts.
At the top of a hill, a spur of the Taygetos Mountains, a castle or the Franconian fortress with a view of Sparta was built at an altitude of 620 meters. This strong fortress of Mystras was built to better defend Sparta.

Some important monuments: The palace of the Despoot halfway up the slope with the Nafplion Gate, the church of Aghia Sophia, the Cathedral, the narrow church of the virgin Evangelistria with frescoes, the Vrontocheion monastery consisting of 2 churches (Theodori and Hodegetria) and a number of monastery buildings, Peribleptos monastery on the edge of the cliff against the cave and under the rock wall, the entrance gates such as the Monemvasia gate, old alleys, the remains of the castle and the fortress walls and the Archaeological Museum (near the Metropolis).

The Metropolis is a basilica built between 1291 and 1292, the basilica is dedicated to St. Dimitrios. The building has different architectural styles, but the exterior is seen as characteristic of the Hellenic architecture from the second half of the 10th century.

The Pantanassa Monastery is on a steep slope and is the only inhabited monastery in Mystras. The monastery is accessible and has a stylish interior.

Tips & distances:

It is best to put your car upstairs and start there from the Frankish castle to the Pantanassa monastery. Then walk back and drive down with your car and visit the lower part.

Take plenty of time for it (at least 3 hours) and take some food and drink with you, because once inside you can only get water from a vending machine (and it can sometimes be empty).

The route from Gythio to Mistras is surprisingly beautiful!

The Museum of Olive and Greek Olive Oil: in Sparta, just 5 km from Mistras, a small but interesting and modern museum, where you can get to know the history of olive and olive oil in an hour with authentic illustrations and interactive screens, ideal for a visit on a hot afternoon or a rainy day! There is also a small shop.
Open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed on Tuesdays.
