De Peloponnesos - The Peloponnese

For centuries it was a religious center where sporting competitions were held and this place owes its origin to the modern Olympic games.
So in Olympia the Olympic Games were held every four years in the summer, of which since 776 BC. the names of the victors are recorded: that year marks the start of the Greek reckoning. The last Olympic games were in 393 AD. taken into account. The first modern games only took place again in 1896 in Athens.

Athens is the head, Sparta the body, but Olympia is the heart of Greece.
The archaeologists uncovered an incredible number of sculptures that were crumbled into thousands of pieces. Sometimes it is difficult to imagine what it was like, but with the booklet containing the monuments with the reconstructions you do get a picture (is available in the villa for inspection).
In the spring, when nature is in bloom, it is twice as beautiful.
Greeks like to make the following metaphors: Athens is the head, Sparta the body, but Olympia is the heart of their country.

It has been completely restored for the Olympic Games in Greece (Athens 2004).
There are two museums in Olympia, the Archaeological Museum and the Museum of the Olympic Games (in the center, a little higher in the village).
We found the Archaeological Museum very interesting to visit, beautiful statues, all masterpieces; such as the pediment of the Zeus Temple, Hermes of Praxiteles, Nike (victory), …

Olympia has a pleasant village center with many shops and restaurants.
The Olympia area is green, mountainous and there are well-known rivers such as the Neda, the Alphios and the Lousios.
Especially in the summer months this place is visited daily by thousands of tourists and then it is also very busy. Large cruise ships dock in Katokolo and come to Olympia by the thousands. The town of Katokolo is therefore very “ruined”.

Tip:

Tip:
