De Peloponnesos - The Peloponnese

The peaks of the Taygetos Mountains dominate the Kalamata skyline. At 2404 meters, the Taygetos is the highest mountain range in the Peloponnese. The mountains stretch over a length of 100 km – from Arcadia in the middle of the peninsula to Cape Tainaro on the southern tip of the Mani.

The area is a true paradise for nature lovers.
The slopes are wooded with Greek spruces (Abies cephallonica) and pine trees (Pinus nigra). In 2005 and 2007, devastating fires unfortunately destroyed a large part of the forest on the Kalamata side. Has been recovering in the meantime.

The Taygetos Mountains is a non-protected area nature reserve of 12,000 hectares.
It lies between Kalamata and Sparta and behind Kardamyli and Stoupa, in the departments of Messinia and Lakonia. The name Taygetos comes from nymph Tayget the daughter of Atlas. The mountain has five peaks and is therefore also called Pentadaktylos (five fingers). On the high peaks such as Xerovouna, Zitali and Prophet Iliad (2404m) there is usually snow in the winter.
Ideal area for mountain hikers, undiscovered and isolated. The very rich flora and fauna means that the area should be declared a protected area. Despite many attempts, this has not yet been achieved.

The area is surprisingly green, cypress, almond tree, eucalyptus, acacia, holm oak, black pine etc.
There are around 150 native plant species here, 26 of which only occur in the Taygetos such as a Campanula species. Furthermore, many varieties of orchids, lavender, anemone and affodil. There are about 85 bird species, including owls, the hawk, blue rock thrush, the buzzard, falcons and the golden eagle.

Especially important in the area is the Eleonora’s Falcon or the Greek name Varvaki.
There are around 4,000 pairs of this falcon in Greece. This is 75% of the world population of this unique bird. It is a migratory bird that arrives in April and returns to Madagascar at the end of October. Do you come across a nest of this falcon; then leave it alone and leave that area. Other mammals in the area include: wolf, fox, jackal, wild cat, weasel, marten, badger, rabbit, hare, and hedgehog. The Mani region connects with the Taygetos area.
In clear weather you can see the peaks of the Taygetos Mountains (with snow in winter) from Villa FINIKI.
From Koroni you almost always see the tops.

Tips & distances:
Taygetos challenge: since 2010 this run has been organized at the end of March, starting in Kardamili of 37 km, 20 km, 5 km
E4 long distance path: starts from the Pyrenees in Spain and ends in Cyprus. In Greece the path is divided into three parts: the northern, the middle and the southern part. The southern part traverses mythical Peloponnese. It starts from Diakopto, Achaia, goes through Arcadia and ends in Gytheio, Laconia. It is not necessary to have a mountain guide because the path is signposted so that every hiker or climber can get to know Greek culture, the diversity of landscapes and the richness of Greek nature.
Villa Finiki – Kardamili: 103 km
Villa Finiki – Anavriti: 165 km
Villa Finiki – Gythio: 170-195 km depending on your route, via the coast or inland)

Hikes
Hike(s): you can book day trips or a three-day hut trip with climbing the highest mountain of the Peloponnese, the 2.407 meter high Profítis Ilías.
Gravity/difficulty level: most hiking trails follow age-old donkey trails. Sometimes paths have fallen into disrepair and overgrown, but more and more they are being restored by volunteers. The day walks are moderately heavy, rise and fall a bit and are not too steep. The climb to the Profítis Ilías from the mountain hut is medium (3 hours of climbing and 2 hours of descending).
Best season: February and March are good months for the coastal walks and the lowlands; everything is then green and in bloom. From the end of April you can walk to the Profítis Ilías in the higher Taygetos. Depending on the winter, there are still snow fields that you have to bypass.
Staying overnight: you can sleep in a B&B, mountain hut and boutique hotel. There is sufficient accommodation along the entire coast of the Peloponnese. The small cozy coastal towns of Stoupa and Kardamili are a good base for walks in the outer Mani. For the inner Mani you can use the city of Gythio on the eponymous bay as a base. A private car is then handy to get to and from starting points for walks.
Accommodation tip: George Kanelloupolos is a mountain guide and has a B&B in the mountain village of Anavriti. He also manages the EOS hut under the Profitis Iliad. The B&B in a beautifully restored historic house. George is a man of the mountains, an experienced alpinist who has completed all the technical courses of the Alpine Club. But unfortunately he did not eat much cheese from Engels. Fortunately his daughter does speak English and she runs the B&B with Mrs. Kanelloupolos.
