Poros is a romantic island, an island of tranquility. The island is often covered with pine trees, olive trees and lemon trees.

Poros is een van de Saronische eilanden.
Poros is maar 23km2 groot en telt ongeveer vijfduizend vaste inwoners. Het ligt vlakbij de kust van Peloponessos, precies tegenover het stadje Galatas. Het eiland Poros ligt op 350 meter afstand van de Peloponnesos, vanaf Galatas is dit maar vijf minuten varen. Er gaat een ferry om het half uur, voor passagiers is dit maar € 2,00. Maar de taxibootjes varen af en aan. Laat je auto in Galatas staan en ga lekker wat eten of drinken op Poros.

Poros bestaat eigenlijk uit twee eilanden, namelijk Sferia en Kalavria.
Sferia is het kleinste eiland, het is een vulkanisch eiland, hierop is het grootste deel van de hoofdstad Poros-stad gebouwd. Het grotere eiland, Kalavria, is het vruchtbare, fraai begroeide deel van Poros. Tussen de twee eilanden is een smal kanaal, de twee eilanden zijn met een brug verbonden.

Het eiland is veelal bedekt met dennenbomen, olijfbomen en citroenbomen. De dennenbomen reiken tot aan de ruige kusten en zandstranden van het eiland. De meest gefotografeerde bezienswaardigheid op Poros is de historische klok, boven op de top van de heuvel.
De klok ligt in het midden van dennenbomen en cactusvijgenbomen. Vanaf hierboven heb je een uitstekend zicht over de stad en de tegenover liggende kust van Peloponessos.

Poros stad is erg levendig, aan de kust zie je vele neoklassieke gebouwen.
Wanneer je door de smalle steegjes wandelt, zie je overal witte huisjes en bougainvilles. In het stadje, dat overigens op de hellingen van een heuvel is gebouwd, zijn hier en daar leuke traditionele taverna’s en kafeneions. Ook zijn er vele souvenirwinkeltjes, bars, juweliers en boetieks.

Archeologisch museum & klooster van Zoodochos Pigi
Wat je in Poros stad zeker moet bezoeken is het archeologisch museum op het Korizi-plein. Hier zijn voorwerpen te zien van de tempel van Poseidon en van Oud-Trizina.
Het klooster van Zoodochos Pigi (bouwjaar 1713) ligt aan het einde van de weg naar Monastiri. Het is een rustig klooster met een mooie kerk en je hebt prachtige uitzichten. Gesloten tussen 13.00 en 17.00 uur. Alleen te bezoeken in gepaste kleding. Even voor de ingang van het klooster een leuk koffie zaakje.

Het heiligdom van Poseidon,
ligt ongeveer vijf kilometer van Poros-stad en is dus ook te voet te bewandelen. Op een redelijk grote oppervlakte zijn er allerlei ruïnes uit de oudheid te zien. Het is gratis, een prachtig uitzicht, maar je hebt veel verbeelding nodig om je een beeld te kunnen vormen. Dit heiligdom speelde een belangrijke rol bij de geestelijke rituelen al in de prehistorische tijd. De inwoners van het eiland hadden zelfs aan de Trojaanse Oorlog deelgenomen. Poseidon was de God van de zee en schepper van de wateren en overal in Griekenland, nabij de zee, werden tempels gebouwd om hem te vereren. Hier pleegde de grote Griekse reder Demosthenes zelfmoord, door uit een gifbeker te drinken toen de Macedoniërs van Alexander de Grote, Poros bezetten.

Op Poros zijn een aantal erg leuke stranden.
Het meest populaire strand is dat van Askeli dat rechts van de brug ligt, wanneer je vanaf Sferia naar Kalavria oversteekt. Hier zijn veel hotels, restaurants en tavernes. De hele omgeving is erg groen en de pijnbomen, olijfbomen, citroenbomen en platanen komen soms tot aan het strand.
Een klein zandstrand te midden van dennenbossen “Limanaki tis Agapis” dat “haventje der liefde” Love Bay betekent, is ook erg leuk. Je kan er  in de schaduw van de grote en kleine dennenbomen liggen. Er is een kantine waar je snacks en drinken kunt bestellen en aan de rotsen aan de westelijke kant van het strandje staat een mooi kerkje. De omgeving is hier werkelijk erg romantisch, vandaar waarschijnlijk ook de naam.

Wandelen op Poros.
Poros is een leuk wandeleiland, niet echt spectaculair, maar een wandeling naar de vuurtoren en het heiligdom van Poseidon is toch een aanrader. Wij hebben enkele wandelingen op GPS, mail ons als je deze graag wilt ontvangen. walkingmessinia@gmail.com

Poros is one of the Saronic islands.
Poros is only 23 km2 in size and has around five thousand permanent residents. It is located near the Peloponnese coast, just opposite the town of Galatas. The island of Poros is 350 meters away from the Peloponnese, from Galatas it is only a five minute boat ride. There is a ferry every half hour, for passengers this is only € 2.00. But the taxi boats sail back and forth. Leave your car in Galatas and enjoy some food or drinks on Poros.

Poros town is very lively, on the coast you see many neoclassical buildings.
When you walk through the narrow alleys, you see white houses and bougainvilleas everywhere. In the town, which is built on the slopes of a hill, there are nice traditional taverns and kafeneions here and there. There are also many souvenir shops, bars, jewelers and boutiques.

Archaeological museum & monastery of Zoodochos Pigi
What you should definitely visit in Poros town is the archaeological museum on Korizi square. Here you can see objects from the temple of Poseidon and of Ancient Trizina.
The monastery of Zoodochos Pigi (built in 1713) is located at the end of the road to Monastiri. It is a quiet monastery with a beautiful church and you have beautiful views. Closed between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. Only to be visited in appropriate clothing. Just before the entrance of the monastery a nice coffee shop.

The sanctuary of Poseidon,
lies approximately five kilometers from Poros city and can therefore also be walked on foot. All kinds of ancient ruins can be seen on a fairly large surface. It is free, a beautiful view, but you need a lot of imagination to be able to form an image. This sanctuary played an important role in the spiritual rituals already in prehistoric times. The inhabitants of the island had even participated in the Trojan War. Poseidon was the God of the sea and creator of the waters and everywhere in Greece, near the sea, temples were built to worship him. Here the great Greek shipowner Demosthenes committed suicide by drinking from a poisoned cup when Alexander the Great’s Macedonians occupied Poros.

There are a number of very nice beaches on Poros.
The most popular beach is that of Askeli, which is to the right of the bridge, when you cross from Sferia to Kalavria. There are many hotels, restaurants and taverns here. The entire area is very green and the pine, olive, lemon and plane trees sometimes reach the beach.
A small sandy beach in the middle of pine forests “Limanaki tis Agapis” which means “port of love” Love Bay is also very nice. You can lie in the shade of the large and small pine trees. There is a canteen where you can order snacks and drinks and there is a beautiful church on the rocks on the western side of the beach. The area here is really very romantic, hence probably the name.

Walking on Poros.
