De Peloponnesos - The Peloponnese

The Lousios is a small but spectacular Greek river in the inhospitable interior of the Peloponnese.
It is about 23 km long, rises at an altitude of 1000 m near the village of Karkaloú, and flows out ± 820 m lower into the Álfios, 4 km northwest of Karytena.

Although he is only a tributary of the Álfios, he has carved an impressive gorge in his headwaters.
This Lousios gorge is 5 km long and almost 300 m deep in the narrowest and most spectacular part. There are various medieval monasteries and churches on the steep cliffs along the wooded banks. Due to its remote location in the heart of the Peloponnese, the Lousios region was a stronghold of resistance fighters during the Greek War of Independence.

Recently, the tourist and sporting assets of the river were discovered:
marked hiking trails have been laid out that connect various points of interest, and rafting, canyoning and kayaking are possible almost all year round.

The picturesque towns of Dimitsána and Stemnítsa on the east bank of the gorge are interesting bases for trips through the region.
Dimitsana is located on the site of the ancient city of Teuthis. The modern Dimitsana stands out for its picturesque alleys with sometimes five storeys high archondiká (= mansions). Worth seeing are the Museum of Folk Science and the Municipal Library (with some rare and unique works).
