De Peloponnesos - The Peloponnese

Monemvasia is the Greek rock of Gibraltar, massive and with a purplish color, a 300-meter high rock mass here rises perpendicularly from the blue sea with the name Monemvasia which means the only access that is indeed there. Yephira or Nea Monemvasia is located at the entrance of the rock.

Monemvasia was destroyed by an earthquake in 375 AD. separated from the mainland and remained an island until the construction of the bridge in the 6th century.
Residents of Laconia who were hunted from the north sought refuge there and founded a city in the 6th century that cannot be seen from the mainland. Due to its strategic location, Monemvasia had grown into a thriving trade settlement in the 8th century. From the mainland you cannot see that there is a complete city on the bare rock.

Monemvasia is divided into a lower and upper city.

  • The lower town is a jumble of narrow streets and alleys with beautiful traditional Venetian houses.
  • The upper town, where the rich families used to live who (literally) looked down on the poor in the lower town, is now a ruin.
  • The 13th-century Agia Sofia church; on the edge of the rock is worth a visit.

Harbor & beaches
There is a small harbor with a landing place for the boats around the Peloponnese. Boat trips possible in many directions. Beaches are: Portelo, the beach at Yephira, the beach at Xifias. On the south side: Pera Kakavos and on the north side the Pori beach.

Caretta caretta nests:
On the beaches you make during the hottest months in Greece; July and August, most likely to see a Caretta caretta. The nests are clearly recognizable by the striking track, but of course leave these nests alone.

At Monemvasia, 19 hiking trails have been plotted.
The shortest route is 3.3 kilometers and the longest route is 10 kilometers. The routes are well marked out and you can even walk without a map. Route 19 passes the most important turtle beach in the Peloponnese. This route is 8 kilometers long and will run in approximately 3 hours.
