Aan de noordkant van de Navarino baai, net voorbij Gialova ligt op een heuvel het oude kasteel Paleokastro, ook wel Oud-Navarino genaamd.

On the north side of the Navarino bay , just past Gialova is located on a hill the old castle Paleokastro, also called Old Navarino.

Je rijdt van Villa Finiki in 42 min. (28 km) naar Divari strand (Golden Beach), van daaruit wandel je in 30 min naar het Paleokastro. Boven word je verrast op een prachtig uitzicht op Pylos, de lagune, Voidokilia beach en de kustlijn!
Je kunt natuurlijk terug dezelfde route wandelen, maar een groot of klein rondje wandelen is wel het leukste.
Loop door tot je uitzicht hebt op de kustlijn, daar zie je een doorgang naar beneden naar het Voidokilia strand. De eerste stap is groot, maar verder valt het wel mee. Je komt dan ook langs de Nestor grot. Je kunt onderlangs wandelen of over het strand van Voidokilia en dan rond de lagune.
Hoe heerlijk is het om een afkoelende duik te nemen na een heerlijke wandeling!

Dit kasteel is in de 13e eeuw door de Venetianen gebouwd op de plek waar de Myceners in de oudheid hun stad Pylos hadden.
Het kasteel is een ruïne, maar de buitenmuren en zijn ronde en vierkante torens zijn in een goede conditie.
Het Paleokastro kasteel verloor zijn betekenis toen in 1573 de Turken een nieuw fort (Neokastro bouwde) bij de zuidelijke ingang van de baai van Navarino.

Onder het kasteel bevindt zich in de klif net boven Voidokilia beach de grot van Nestor. Volgens de Griekse Mythologie zou God Hermes in deze grot een kudde met dieren die hij van God Apollo gestolen had, hebben verstopt. In deze grotten zijn voorwerpen gevonden uit het jaar 7000 voor Christus.

Wandelen:
Wandel door naar het kerkje Profitis Ilias voor een mooi uitzicht op de kustlijn.

Of course you can walk back the same route, but walking a large or small circle is the best thing.
Continue until you have a view of the coastline, there you see a passage down to the Voidokilia beach. The first step is great, but further down it is not so bad. You will also pass the Nestor cave. You can walk underneath or over the beach of Voidokilia and then around the lagoon.
How wonderful is it to take a refreshing dive after a wonderful walk!

This castle was built by the Venetians in the 13th century on the site where the Mycenaeans in ancient times had their city of Pylos.
The castle is a ruin, but the outer walls and its round and square towers are in good condition.
The Paleokastro castle lost its significance when in 1573 the Turks built a new fort ( Neokastro ) at the southern entrance of the Bay of Navarino .

Below the castle is in the cliff just above Voidokilia beach the cave of Nestor. According to Greek Mythology, God Hermes would have hid in this cave a herd of animals he had stolen from God Apollo. In these caves objects were found from the year 7000 BC.
