Methana is een schiereiland aan de Peloponnesos, tussen Epidavros en Poros. Het is een verrassend rustig eiland, een vulkaaneiland en dat is overal op het eiland te zien.

Methana is a peninsula on the Peloponnese, between Epidavros and Poros. It is a surprisingly quiet island, a volcano island and that can be seen everywhere on the island.

Op Methana zijn 32 vulkaanmonden gevonden.
De laatste uitbarsting was in 230 v. C , de krater zelf heeft een doorsnede van 100 meter en is 25 meter diep. Je kunt deze krater zien als even voorbij het dorpje Kameni Chora over een smal voetpad omhoog klautert. Je wandelt over een lavalandschap met prachtige vergezichten over de zee richting Angistri, Aegina en Poros.  Bij de krater aangekomen heb je een prachtig uitzicht, bij helder weer kan je Epidavros aan de overkant zien liggen. Bij de krater denk je dat je er bent, maar je moet dan nog even verder klauteren. Op een bepaald moment zie je een bordje Vulcano staan op een hoop stenen, wijzend naar een groot driehoekig gat. Daar kijk je pas echt de diepte in!

Methana is een vulkaaneiland met thermaalbaden.
Als je over de dam aan komt rijden word je adem ontnomen door het zwavelmeer, Vromolimni, maar eenmaal verder ruik je het niet meer (of went het?).  Het grote Neoclassicistisch gebouw aan dit meer was ooit een van de bekendste thermaalbaden van Griekenland, maar sinds 19 juni 2017 gesloten en staat nu zelfs te koop. In de zee zijn nog wel enkele warme zwavelhoudende plaatsen te vinden. Een ervan is net voor je de plaats Methana binnen rijdt, rechts langs de weg staat een klein kapelletje. Hier loopt een pad naar beneden, er is een kleine (open) ruimte om je om te kleden en vaak zie je er al wat mensen dobberen. Na Methana passeer je ook nog de Radon thermal springs, tegenover het kerkje Ag. Nikolaos. Het gebruik van de Pausanias baden, net voor het plaatsje Ag. Nikolaos worden afgeraden vanwege de grote gasconcentratie en daardoor gevaar voor verstikking.

De hoofdstad Methana heeft heel wat van zijn glorie verloren door de sluiting van het thermaal bad.
Zeker in het voor- en najaar ziet het er wat verloren uit. Methana heeft een brede boulevard waar verschillende tavernes, winkeltjes en hotels aan liggen. Helaas zijn er veel in slechte staat. Op het einde van de havenpier staat een kerkje. Leuk om er even heen te wandelen. Aan de grote pier in het midden van de boulevard leggen de veerboten aan. Methana is per boot verbonden met de haven van Piraeus, met een vaartijd van ongeveer 2 uur. De Poros Methana veerdienst verbindt Saronische Eilanden met Griekenland. Momenteel is er slechts 1 veermaatschappij die deze route aanbiedt, Saronic Ferries. De veerdienst gaat maximaal 12 keer per week met een vaartijd van ongeveer 25 minuten, afhankelijk van het seizoen, dus altijd even van te voren controleren.

Vathi is een gezellig visserplaatsje met een diepe baai.
Vathi ligt langs de kust vanaf de hoofdstad Methana in de richting van de vulkaan en heeft zo’n 150 inwoners. Charmante plaats om wat te drinken of te lunchen. Er leggen veel boten, catamarans aan, het is een stopplaats van veel zeil tours. Je kunt van hieruit naar de vulkaan rijden, maar ook wandelen via de aangegeven wandelpaden. Het landschap van Vathi naar Kaimeni Chora bestaat vooral uit gestold lava.

De grot Peristeri-Pigeon ligt verborgen en is moeilijk te bezoeken.
Het ligt op de weg van de hoofdstad Methana naar Vathi, maar de bewegwijzering is nauwelijks te zien. Het is een natuurlijke grot, er is geen route naar toe gemaakt en daardoor alleen door de beoefende klauteraar te bezoeken. Er zijn 3 ruimtes/kamers, het is er steil en het kan er glad zijn, de eerste is zo te bereiken, voor de volgende moet je zwemmen in het koude water. Het is er donker, dus een goede zaklamp is wel aan te raden. Wij zijn er niet in geweest, maar we hoorden van bezoekers dat het een ware uitdaging was en je achteraf een trots gevoel hebt. Als je van klauteren en grotten houdt blijkt het een must to do te zijn!

Als je de kustweg naar boven volgt kom je langs het pittoreske plaatsje Agios Nikolaos.
Heerlijk plaats om even te stoppen en te genieten van het uitzicht op de eilandjes Moni Eginas en Agistri. Even voorbij Agios Nikolaos zie je het bord staan Pausanias Baths. Het gebruik van de Pausanias baden worden afgeraden vanwege de grote gasconcentratie en daardoor gevaar voor verstikking. Maar wel interessant om er even naar toe te wandelen.

Methana is hèt eiland voor wandelaars, fotografen en natuurliefhebbers.
Methana is een van de bestemmingen in Griekenland, dat door het massatoerisme onaangeroerd is gebleven. Je kunt nog steeds het “echte Griekenland” ervaren met een verrassend landschap en natuur, in het voorjaar vind je er zeldzame orchideeën.
Er zijn ongeveer 60 km wandelpaden uitgezet op Methana, die na een natte winter soms wel wat moeilijk te vinden en te volgen zijn. We raden je dan ook de onmisbare Methana app van Topoguide te downloaden op je smartphone.

32 volcano mouths have been found on Methana.
The last eruption was in 230 BC, the crater itself has a diameter of 100 meters and is 25 meters deep. You can see this crater when you climb a narrow footpath just past the village of Kameni Chora. You walk over a lava landscape with beautiful views over the sea towards Angistri, Aegina and Poros. Arriving at the crater you have a beautiful view, in clear weather you can see Epidavros on the other side. At the crater you think you are there, but you have to climb a little further. At a certain moment you see a sign of Vulcano on a pile of stones, pointing at a large triangular hole. Then you really look into it!

Methana is a volcano island with thermal baths.
When you drive over the dam, your breath is taken away by the sulfur lake, Vromolimni, but once you continue, you no longer smell it (or get used to it?). The large Neoclassical building on this lake was once one of the most famous thermal baths in Greece, but closed since 19 June 2017 and is now even for sale. There are still some warm sulfur-containing places in the sea. One is just before you enter Methana, on the right side of the road is a small chapel. A path runs down here, there is a small (open) space to change clothes and you often see people floating around. After Methana you also pass the Radon thermal springs, opposite the church Ag. Nikolaos. The use of the Pausanias baths, just before the town of Ag. Nikolaos are not recommended due to the high gas concentration and therefore the risk of suffocation.

The capital Methana has lost a lot of its glory due to the closure of the thermal bath.
Certainly in the spring and autumn it looks a bit lost. Methana has a wide boulevard with various taverns, shops and hotels. Unfortunately, many are in poor condition. There is a church at the end of the harbor pier. Nice to just walk there. The ferries moor at the large pier in the middle of the boulevard. Methana is connected by boat to the port of Piraeus, with a sailing time of approximately 2 hours. The Poros Methana ferry service connects Saronic Islands with Greece. Currently there is only 1 ferry company offering this route, Saronic Ferries. The ferry service runs a maximum of 12 times a week with a sailing time of approximately 25 minutes, depending on the season, so always check in advance.

Vathi is a cozy fishing village with a deep bay.
Vathi is located along the coast from the capital Methana in the direction of the volcano and has about 150 inhabitants. Charming place to have a drink or lunch. There are many boats, catamarans, it is a stopping point for many sailing tours. You can drive from here to the volcano, but you can also walk via the indicated hiking trails. The landscape from Vathi to Kaimeni Chora consists mainly of solidified lava.

The Peristeri-Pigeon cave is hidden and hard to visit.
It lies on the road from the capital Methana to Vathi, but the signposting is hardly visible. It is a natural cave, no route has been made to it and therefore only to be visited by the practitioner. There are 3 rooms / rooms, it is steep and it can be slippery, the first can be reached in no time, for the next you have to swim in the cold water. It is dark there, so a good flashlight is recommended. We have not been in it, but we heard from visitors that it was a real challenge and that you feel proud afterwards. If you like scrambling and caving, it turns out to be a must to do!

If you follow the coastal road up you will pass the picturesque town of Agios Nikolaos.
Lovely place to stop and enjoy the view of the islands of Moni Eginas and Agistri. Just beyond Agios Nikolaos you will see the sign Pausanias Baths. The use of the Pausanias baths is not recommended due to the high gas concentration and therefore the risk of suffocation. But interesting to take a walk.

Methana is the island for walkers, photographers and nature lovers.
Methana is one of the destinations in Greece that has remained untouched by mass tourism. You can still experience the “real Greece” with a surprising landscape and nature, in the spring you will find rare orchids.
