Spetses is een historisch eiland, waarvan de beroemde Griekse heldin Laskarina Bouboulina afkomstig is. Men noemt Spetses ook wel het Jasmijn eiland, het ruikt er vooral ’s avonds erg lekker als alle planten net water hebben gehad.

Spetses is a historic island, from which the famous Greek heroine Laskarina Bouboulina comes. Spetses is also called the Jasmine Island, it smells very nice especially in the evenings when all plants have just had water.

Spetses maakt deel uit van de Saronische eilanden.
Het heuvelachtige eilandje Spetses ligt in het zuiden van Griekenland en maakt deel uit van de Saronische Eilanden. Spetses ligt in de Saronische Golf vlak bij de eilanden Hydra, Dokos, Aegina en Poros.
Spetses ligt aan de ingang van de Argolische Golf op slechts 2,5 kilometer van de kust van het schiereiland Peloponnesos. De oppervlakte van Spetses bedraagt 22 km2 en ligt op 52 zeemijl van de havenstad Piraeus. Je kunt eenvoudig met de veerboot of snellere draagvleugelboot hiernaartoe varen vanuit Porto Cheli, Kosta of Hydra.

Bij aankomst in de haven merk je direct dat dit eiland “leeft”.
Er zijn allerlei terrasjes en winkels en overal is het vrij druk. Rondom de haven maar ook iets buiten de haven, zijn overal kanonnen te zien, deze kanonnen gebruikten de Grieken in de 19e eeuw in hun strijd tegen de Turkse bezetter.
Rond de haven zijn allerlei gezellige terrasjes en pleintjes maar ook in de smalle straatjes, daarachter, zijn veel winkels, souvenirwinkels, juweliers, bakkers , snackbars etc.

In het centrum zie je geen auto’s, het is namelijk autovrij,
wel zie je paarden met koets, een typisch kenmerk van dit eiland. Ook zijn er heel veel brommertjes, jammer genoeg zorgen deze voor wat (geluids) overlast.
De lokale bevolking heeft soms een ontheffing hiervoor gekregen en mag zich over het eiland met de auto verplaatsen. Desondanks is er wel een busdienst op het eiland die in het noorden Kounoupitsa en Ligoneri met elkaar verbindt en in het zuiden Agia Marina en Agios Anargiri.

Wat zeker de moeite waard is, is een wandeltocht richting de vuurtoren.
Deze wandeltocht duurt ongeveer 25 minuten en is erg leuk, je komt namelijk voorbij diverse kiezelstranden, mooie huizen, gezellige haventjes en mooie pleintjes. De huizen op Spetses hebben een zekere aristocratische stijl, die bewijst dat de inwoners van het eiland rijke mensen waren. Al deze huizen hebben hun oorspronkelijke traditionele stijl bewaard en zijn mooi om te zien.

Spetses stranden:
Ondanks dat Spetses geen groot eiland is zijn er genoeg goede stranden te vinden. En wel de mooiste stranden van Saronische eilanden. Niet ver van de haven vind je Kounoupitsa beach en Agia Marina beach. Ze liggen op loopafstand, minder dan een half uur, van de haven.
Aan de westkust van Spetses zijn Agia Paraskevi en Agli Anargyroi mooie stranden. Deze laatste is het populairste en dus ook drukste strand van hete eiland.
Het strand van Anargyroi heeft de grot van Bekiri als bezienswaardigheid. Als je deze wilt bezichtigen moet je doorlopen tot het eind van het strand, hier de rots opklimmen en ongeveer 250 meter doorlopen langs de zee. Vervolgens hier de betonnen trap en tussen twee rotsen door naar beneden.
De stranden Vrellos, Paraskevi en Zogeria aan de noordkust kun je alleen met de boot bereiken.

Er zijn 2 Musea op Spetses:
het Bouboulina museum en het museum van Spetses (Mexis-museum).
Het museum van Spetses vind je in een fraai oud herenhuis uit de 18e eeuw. Geopend van dinsdag tot en met zondag van 10.00 tot 15.00 uur en de toegang bedraagt € 3,-.
Het Bouboulina museum ligt precies achter de haven en is een bezienswaardigheid die je niet mag missen tijdens je reis naar Spetses. Bouboulina is een nationale heldin en het icoon van het Griekse eiland. Dagelijks geopend van 10.30 tot 18.00 uur en de toegang bedraagt € 6,- per persoon..

Tips & afstanden:
Ga in juni of september; het is het eiland waar de royals vakantie vieren en in het hoogseizoen erg druk.

Elk jaar op 8 september viert men op Spetses “De overwinning op het Ottomaanse admiraalsschip” uit het jaar 1822. Een boot, die het Ottomaanse schip uit die tijd moet voorstellen, wordt dan in de haven in brand gestoken. Bijzonder om mee te maken tijdens je vakantie op Spetses.

Restaurants:
Er is heel veel keuze, voornamelijk vis tavernes, de meeste duurder dan gemiddeld.
Mourayo Restaurant: Lekkere vis, romantisch aan de oude haven
Patralis Psarotaverna: Vis Taverne, mooi gelegen restaurant, iets buiten het centrum
Orloff Restaurant: bij de oude haven, lekker maar zeker niet goedkoop, de favoriet Koning Willem-Alexander en Koningin Maxima

De overtocht van 15 min vanuit Kosta (naast Portocheli) wordt door taxibootjes verzorgd. Zorg dat je in een volle taxiboot stapt, want de prijs is € 20 (2017), te verdelen onder alle opvarenden.

Afstand Poros – Spetses (Kosta): 60 km in 1 uur en 20 min.
Afstand Nafplio – Spetses (Kosta): 85 km in 1 uur en 35 min.
Afstand Athene vliegveld – Spetses (Kosta): 208 km in 2 uur en 45 min.
Afstand Villa Finiki Messinia – Spetses (Kosta): 282 km in 4 uur.

Spetses is part of the Saronic Islands.
The hilly island of Spetses is located in the south of Greece and is part of the Saronic Islands. Spetses is located in the Saronic Gulf near the islands of Hydra, Dokos, Aegina and Poros.
Spetses is located at the entrance of the Argolic Gulf just 2.5 kilometers from the coast of the Peloponnese peninsula. The area of Spetses is 22 km2 and is located 52 nautical miles from the port city of Piraeus. You can easily sail here by ferry or faster hydrofoil from Porto Cheli, Kosta or Hydra.

Upon arrival at the port you will immediately notice that this island “lives”.
There are all kinds of terraces and shops and it is quite busy everywhere. Cannons can be seen everywhere around the port, but also slightly outside the port. These guns were used by the Greeks in the 19th century in their fight against the Turkish occupier.
Around the harbor there are all kinds of cozy terraces and squares, but also in the narrow streets, behind it, there are many shops, souvenir shops, jewelers, bakers, snack bars etc.

You don’t see any cars in the center, as it is car-free,
you do see horses with carriages, a typical feature of this island. There are also a lot of mopeds, unfortunately these cause some (noise) nuisance.
The locals have sometimes been granted an exemption for this and are allowed to travel around the island by car. Nevertheless, there is a bus service on the island that connects Kounoupitsa and Ligoneri in the north and Agia Marina and Agios Anargiri in the south.

What is certainly worthwhile is a walk towards the lighthouse.
This walk takes about 25 minutes and is very nice, because you pass various pebble beaches, beautiful houses, cozy harbors and pretty squares. The houses on Spetses have a certain aristocratic style, which proves that the inhabitants of the island were rich people. All these houses have kept their original traditional style and are beautiful to see.

Spetses beaches:
Although Spetses is not a large island, there are plenty of good beaches. And the most beautiful beaches of Saronic Islands. Not far from the harbor you will find Kounoupitsa beach and Agia Marina beach. They are within walking distance, less than half an hour, from the port.
On the west coast of Spetses, Agia Paraskevi and Agli Anargyroi are beautiful beaches. The latter is the most popular and therefore also the busiest beach on a hot island.
Anargyroi Beach has the cave of Bekiri as its landmark. If you want to see this, you have to walk to the end of the beach, climb the rock here and walk about 250 meters along the sea. Then here the concrete stairs and down between two rocks.
The beaches Vrellos, Paraskevi and Zogeria on the north coast can only be reached by boat.

There are 2 Museums on Spetses:
the Bouboulina museum and the museum of Spetses (Mexis museum).
The Spetses Museum can be found in a beautiful old mansion from the 18th century. Open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 am to 03:00 pm and admission is € 3.
The Bouboulina museum is located exactly behind the harbor and is a sight not to be missed during your trip to Spetses. Bouboulina is a national heroine and the icon of the Greek island. Open daily from 10:45 AM to 6:00 PM and admission is € 6 per person.

Tips & distances:
Go in June or September; it is the island where the royals spend their holidays and is very busy in high season.

Every year on 8 September, Spetses celebrates “The victory over the Ottoman Admiral ship” from 1822. A boat that the Ottoman ship of that time is supposed to present is then set ablaze in the harbor. Special to experience during your holiday on Spetses.

There is a lot of choice, mainly fish taverns, most more expensive than average.

Orloff Restaurant: near the old port, tasty but certainly not cheap, the favorite King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima

The 15-minute crossing from Kosta (next to Portocheli) is provided by taxi boats. Make sure you get in a full taxi boat, because the price is € 20 (2017), to be distributed to all persons on board.
