The port of Patras and the Rio-Antirro bridge
The port of Patras is one of the most important in Greece. From Patras there are ferry connections to Italy, the Ionian Islands, Pireaus and many other destinations.
Near Patras (in Rio) is the Rio-Antirro bridge, the longest cable-stayed bridge in the world. This bridge connects the Peloponnese with the mainland.
Patras Carnival
The Carnival of Patras is one of the most famous in Greece, which is especially exuberantly celebrated by the strongly present gay community. It ends with the burning at the stake of the king of the carnival and a large parade of boats and costumed groups.
The carnival festivities take place every year; in 2020 from January 17 (opening) to March 2 (the big parade is on March 1, 2020).
Patras Castle
The Byzantine, later Venetian, medieval castle of Patras lies above the city and you have a magnificent view of the city and the nearby Ionian islands. It is free to visit from 8.30 am to 3 pm (closed on Mondays). The Ancient Odeum is also worth a visit, this is within walking distance of the castle.
Grave church of Ajos Andreas
On the boulevard stands the Grave Church Ajos Andreas, on the square that has the same name. Striking in the interior are the frescoes of the dome and of the apse and a beautifully sculpted wooden chandelier.
