The town of Ioannina lies on the shores of Lake Pamvotis, a large freshwater lake at the foot of the Mitsikeli mountain range.
Ioannina is de hoofdstad van het departement Ioannina
en ligt in de Zagoria streek, regio Epirus. Het departement Ioannina is een uitermate bergachtig gebied met hoge bergen, geweldige grotten, beboste groene hellingen, onstuimige rivieren, prachtige valleien en kloven en een aantal belangrijke meren.
De stad Ioannina ligt aan de oevers van het Pamvotis-meer, een groot zoetwatermeer aan de voet van het Mitsikeli gebergte. De oppervlakte is 23 vierkante km, de diepte reikt tot 13 m. en heeft een omtrek van 33 km. Voor degenen die van wandelen houden, een wandeling rondom het meer is een schitterende ervaring.

Ioannina heeft de charme van een oude stad,
maar het is ook een moderne en levendige stad omdat hier een van de Griekse Universiteiten zich bevindt.
Ioannina is prachtig gelegen in een schitterende natuur. Aan het meer zijn er gezellige terrasjes met tavernes, cafés en bars.
Ioannina en omgeving staat bekend om de vele zilversmeden en de winkels met zilveren sieraden en borden.
Vanaf het Litharitsa Park is er een geweldig uitzicht op het meer. In de zomermaanden worden in de stad verschillende festiviteiten georganiseerd.
Het kasteel van Ioannina
werd gebouwd 528 na Christus, het is het oudste Byzantijnse kasteel van Griekenland. Het kasteel bestaat uit vier delen: de binnenplaats, Akropolis met Aslan-moskee, Akropolis met Ich Kale en de oude stad.
Het gebied heeft een omtrek van 2000 meter en een breedte van 10 meter.
Binnen in het kasteel zijn ook drie van de belangrijkste musea van Ioannina.
Ali Pasha museum
De geschiedenis van Ioannina is nauw verbonden aan de Turken. In sommige buurten van Ioannina waant men zich in Turkije, vooral bij het bezichtigen van lokale markten en het eilandje Nisi in het midden van het meer, het eiland van Ali Pascha, met zijn kloosters en het verhaal van “Kyra Frosini”. Kyra Frosini was een vrouw die vermoord werd omdat zij niet met Ali Pasha naar bed wilde. Heel veel gebouwen uit die tijd zijn goed bewaard en zijn vandaag de dag te bezichtigen.
De overzetbootjes varen ieder half uur en de tocht duurt 10 minuten
Zilversmeedkunst museum
bevindt zich in het kasteel van Ioannina, in het westelijke bastion van de noordoostelijke Akropolis. De expositieruimtes bestaan uit twee verdiepingen. De 1ste verdieping omvat het belangrijkste deel van de tentoonstelling, dat verwijst naar de geschiedenis en technologie van zilversmeedkunst in Epirus. Op de 2de verdieping wordt de verzameling Epirote zilver- en goudsmederijwerken gepresenteerd, die dateren uit de 18e tot de 20e eeuw.

In Bizani, 14 km ten zuiden van Ioannina, ligt het museum van Pavlos Vrellis, waar de geschiedenis van Griekenland herleeft in de vorm van wassen beelden.

Zagoria is een prachtig bergachtig gebied,
ligt zo’n 30 kilometer ten noorden van de stad Ioannina en bestaat uit 46 dorpen waarvan er 44 bewoond zijn. De huizen zijn in een typische Zagori-bouwstijl, met stenen gebouwd. De Vikos kloof in Zagoria is erg bekend, evenals het drakenmeer.
Zagoria is een geliefd wandelgebied.
Vier kilometer ten noorden van Ioannina ligt Perama; hier ligt het grootste en oudste grottenstelsel van Griekenland met indrukwekkende stalactieten en stalagmieten.
In de groene omgeving worden onder andere druiven geteeld en de streek staat bekend om de kwaliteit van het Zagoria bronwater.

The castle of Ioannina
was built 528 AD, it is the oldest Byzantine castle of Greece. The castle consists of four parts: the courtyard, Acropolis with Aslan mosque, Acropolis with Ich Kale and the old city.

Ali Pasha museum
The history of Ioannina is closely linked to the Turks. In some neighborhoods of Ioannina one thinks in Turkey, especially when visiting local markets and the island of Nisi in the middle of the lake, the island of Ali Passcha, with its monasteries and the story of “Kyra Frosini”. Kyra Frosini was a woman who was killed because she did not want to go to bed with Ali Pasha. Many buildings from that time are well preserved and can be visited today.
The ferry boats run every half an hour and the trip takes 10 minutes.
Silversmithing Museum
is located in the castle of Ioannina, in the western bastion of the northeastern Acropolis. The exhibition spaces consist of two floors.
The first floor contains the most important part of the exhibition, which refers to the history and technology of silversmithing in Epirus.
On the second floor, the collection of Epirote silver and goldsmith works is presented, dating from the 18th to the 20th century.

In Bizani, 14 km south of Ioannina, is the museum of Pavlos Vrellis, where the history of Greece revives in the form of wax images.

Zagoria is a beautiful mountainous area,
located about 30 kilometers north of the city of Ioannina and consists of 46 villages of which 44 are inhabited. The houses are built in a typical Zagori style, with stones.
The Vikos gorge in Zagoria is very well known, as is the dragon lake.
Zagoria is a popular hiking area.
Four kilometers north of Ioannina lies Perama; here is the largest and oldest cave system in Greece with impressive stalactites and stalagmites.
In the green environment, among other things, grapes are grown and the region is known for the quality of the Zagoria spring water.
