Kefalonia is een prachtig groen eiland in het westen van Griekenland, gelegen in de Ionische Zee. Het is de grootste van de Ionische eilanden, heeft een oppervlakte van 782km2 en een kustlijn van 254 km.

Kefalonia is a beautiful green island in the west of Greece, located in the Ionian Sea. It is the largest of the Ionian islands, has an area of 782 km2 and a coastline of 254 km.
Kefalonia ligt tussen de eilanden Lefkas (N) en Zakynthos (Z) in. Het eilandje Ithaka ligt noordoostelijk, bijna tegen Kefalonia aan.
Komende van Igoumenitsa is het leuk om via Lefkas te rijden, overtocht van Vassiliki naar het pittoreske havenplaatsje Fiskardo en daarna van Poros naar Kyllini op de Peloponnesos.

Het eiland heeft prachtige stranden met helder blauw water, bergen en veel cipressen. Het eiland heeft zijn oorspronkelijke karakter behouden. Er zijn veel havenstadjes met terrasjes en restaurantjes en veel bezienswaardigheden (grotten, kloosters, musea, natuurpark). Het rijke en vruchtbare Kefalonia staat bekend om zijn rode en witte wijn, de Robola, zijn honing en witte kaas. Leuk om de winery in Omala te bezoeken.
De hoofdstad Argostoli is een levendige, moderne stad
dat het culturele en commerciële centrum van het eiland is. Deze stad ligt in de baai van Koutavos dat op een lagune lijkt. Hier bevindt zich de Drapanos-brug die 900 meter lang is en Argostoli met de overkant van de baai verbindt. Halverwege de brug bevindt zich een monument ter ere van Charles de Bosset, de bouwer van de brug in 1813. Het grote Vallianos plein in het centrum van de stad, is de plek waar jong en oud samen komt. Rondom het plein zijn gezellige cafés en restaurants.

Assos is een van de meest traditionele en mooiste dorpen van Kefalonia.
Dit dorp is amfitheatrisch gebouwd op het gelijknamige schiereiland, in het midden van een groene omgeving. De groene sparren en dennenbomen in combinatie met het turkoois van de zee zorgen voor een ongekende natuurschoonheid. Assos, dat 35 kilometer ten noorden van Argostoli ligt, is tussen twee baaien gebouwd. De architectuur van de gebouwen in het dorp is volgens de Ionische eilanden stijl en de inwoners zijn zeer gastvrij en vriendelijk.
Ten zuiden van Assos ligt het beroemdste en bekendste strand van Kefalonia; Myrtos.
Op alle kalenders en folders van Kefalonia wordt de foto van Myrtos gebruikt en is zo min of meer de kenmerkfoto van het eiland geworden. Door verschillende organisaties is dit strand verkozen als het mooiste strand van Griekenland en door sommige zelfs als het mooiste van heel Europa. Een blik op dit strand zal je niet gauw vergeten. Zowel de aanblik van bovenaf als een duik in de golven is verrassend. Zo bijzonder zijn de vele kleurschakeringen hier. De ondergaande zon vervolmaakt dit kleurige tafereel.
De grot en het ondergrondse meer van Melissani
liggen 2 km ten noordwesten van Sami. Het is één van de mooiste en interessantste bezienswaardigheden op Kefalonia. Bij de entree zijn trappen en een lange ondergrondse gang waardoor het ondergrondse meer bereikbaar is. Het meer ligt ongeveer twintig meter onder de grond en de diepte van het water varieert van tien meter tot dertig meter.
Je kunt de grot bezoeken, entree € 7, het miniboottochtje duurt niet lang, ongeveer 15 minuten, maar is meer dan de moeite waard. Wanneer de zon hoog staat is de grot indrukwekkend, omdat dan de kleuren van het meer helderblauw worden, de sfeer in het meer is dan sprookjesachtig. De lichtval is hier uniek, vooral tussen twaalf en drie uur. In het hoogseizoen kan het hier wel erg druk zijn en er is dan vaak een wachtrij.

Coming from Igoumenitsa it is nice to drive via Lefkas, crossing from Vassiliki to the picturesque harbor town of Fiskardo and then from Poros to Kyllini on the Peloponnese.

The island has retained its original character. There are many harbor towns with terraces and restaurants and many attractions (caves, monasteries, museums, nature park). The rich and fertile Kefalonia is known for its red and white wine, the Robola, its honey and white cheese. Nice to visit the winery in Omala.
The capital Argostoli is a vibrant, modern city
that is the cultural and commercial center of the island. This city lies in the bay of Koutavos that resembles a lagoon. Here is the Drapanos bridge that is 900 meters long and connects Argostoli with the other side of the bay. Halfway across the bridge there is a monument in honour of Charles de Bosset, who built the bridge in 1813. The large Vallianos square in the center of the city is the place where young and old come together. Around the square are cozy cafes and restaurants.

South of Assos is the most famous and famous beach of Kefalonia; Myrtos.

This beach has been chosen by several organizations as the most beautiful beach in Greece and by some even the most beautiful in Europe. You will not soon forget a look at this beach. The cave and the underground lake of Melissani are located 2 km northwest of Sami. It is one of the most beautiful and interesting sights on Kefalonia. At the entrance there are stairs and a long underground corridor through which the underground is more accessible. The lake is about twenty meters below the ground and the depth of the water varies from ten meters to thirty meters.
You can visit the cave, entrance fee € 7, the mini boat trip does not take long, about 15 minutes, but is more than worth it. When the sun is high, the cave is impressive, because then the colors of the lake become bright blue, the atmosphere in the lake is fairytale. The light is unique here, especially between twelve and three o’clock. In high season it can be very busy here and there is often a queue.
