Lefkas is zeer groen en bergachtig met uitgestrekte bossen, die het landschap een natuurlijk karakter geven. Samen met de mooie zandstranden en het azuurblauwe water mag dit tot één van de mooiste Griekse eilanden berekend worden.

De reis - The journey
Lefkas is very green and mountainous with extensive forests, which give the landscape a natural character. Together with the beautiful sandy beaches and the azure blue water this may be calculated as one of the most beautiful Greek islands.
Lefkas (Lefkada) is met een oppervlakte van 305 km2, het op vier na grootste Ionische eiland.
Het ligt tussen Corfu en Kefalonia in. Het eiland is verbonden met een (gratis) verplaatsbare brug aan het vasteland. Lefkas dankt zijn naam aan de witte stranden en de witte rotsen bij Kaap Lefkatas (lefkos=wit).
De meeste vakantiebestemmingen op Lefkas liggen aan de oost- en zuidkust, terwijl de mooiste stranden langs de westkust te vinden zijn. Er zijn veel leuke toeristische plaatsjes; Nidri, Poros, Syvota, Vassikiki, Karia, Englouvi, Agios Nikitas, de een wat groter, de ander wat kleiner. Lefkas stad en Nidri zijn wel de drukste plaatsen maar enorm gezellig!
Igoumenitsa- Lefkas: 130 km
De hoofdstad Lefkas ligt in het noorden van het eiland en zie je als eerste liggen als je het eiland op komt rijden.
Het heeft een mooie moderne jachthaven waar in de zomermaanden veel zeilboten liggen. Het is een gezellige stad en zeker in de vakantieperiode is het hier lekker druk. Terrasjes van restaurants en vistavernes zijn er volop en de lokaal gemaakte gerechten zijn zeer goed. Aan de westkant van de haven vind je bars met terrasjes aan het water en aan de oostkant liggen de meeste restaurants en café’s. Mooie zandstranden in de buurt zijn Ammoglossa beach en Agios Ionnis beach.
Tip: bezoek de distilleerderij en winkel van het familiebedrijfje Frangoulis; het ligt in een zijstraatje van de hoofdstraat (4 Mitropoleos), proef de likeur Rozoli gemaakt van citrusvruchten.
Nidri is de meest toeristische- en gezelligste badplaats van het eiland.
Jong en oud kunnen zich hier uitstekend vermaken met de vele winkeltjes, terrassen, restaurants en een gezellige hoofdstraat. In de baai liggen veel zeilboten en je hebt uitzicht op eilandjes voor de kust. Bij Lefkas liggen nog negen kleinere eilanden voor de kust, die je per boot tijdens je vakantie kunt bezoeken.
De Kataraktis = watervallen op Lefkas liggen dichtbij het dorpje Rachi en drie kilometer van Nidri.
Deze mooie watervallen bevinden zich in de kloof Dimosaris. De waterval ligt in een prachtige natuur en een wandeling langs de beekjes en meertjes is meer dan de moeite waard. Vanaf Nidri wandel je in 40 min. naar de watervallen. Het is een prettige wandeling, neem een fles water mee en goede schoenen zijn aan te raden. Je kunt er ook met de auto komen, een paar honderd meter van de waterval is een ruime parkeergelegenheid in het bos.
Porto Katsiki is één van de beroemdste stranden, niet alleen van Lefkas, maar van heel Griekenland.
De contrasten tussen de witte, fraaie hoge rotsen van krijtsteen, tot wel 200 meter hoog en witte stranden enerzijds en de felle turquoise kleuren van de zee anderzijds, zijn adembenemend mooi. Porto Katsiki is een van de bestemmingen op Lefkas die je niet mag missen. Je kunt het strand bereiken met de auto of scooter en het laatste stukje dien je te voet, via een trap naar beneden, af te leggen.
Loop voor je de trap afgaat nog wat verder door het terras op om de mooiste foto te maken van het strand en de baai.

Lefkas (Lefkada) with an area of 305 km2 is the fifth largest Ionian island.
It lies between Corfu and Kefalonia. The island is connected to a (free) movable bridge on the mainland. Lefkas owes its name to the white beaches and the white rocks at Cape Lefkatas (lefkos = white).
Most holiday destinations on Lefkas are on the east and south coast, while the most beautiful beaches can be found along the west coast. There are many nice tourist places; Nidri, Poros, Syvota, Vassikiki, Karia, Englouvi, Agios Nikitas, the one a bit bigger, the other a bit smaller.
Lefkas city and Nidri are the busiest places but very cozy!
Igoumenitsa- Lefkas: 130 km
The capital Lefkas is located in the north of the island and it is the first you see when you drive up the island.
It has a beautiful modern marina where many sailing boats lie in the summer months.
It is a cozy city and certainly during the holiday season it is very busy here. There are plenty terraces of restaurants and fish taverns and the locally made dishes are very good. On the west side of the harbor you will find bars with terraces on the waters edge and on the east side most restaurants and cafes. Beautiful sandy beaches nearby are Ammoglossa beach and Agios Ionnis beach.
Tip: visit the distillery and shop of the family business Frangoulis; it is located in a side street off the main street (4 Mitropoleos), taste the liqueur Rozoli made from citrus fruits.
Nidri is the most touristic and cozy place on the island.
Young and old can enjoy themselves here with the many shops, terraces, restaurants and a pleasant main street. In the bay there are many sailing boats and you have a view of islands off the coast. At Lefkas there are nine smaller islands off the coast, which you can visit by boat during your holiday.
The Kataraktis = waterfalls on Lefkas are close to the village of Rachi and three kilometers from Nidri.
These beautiful waterfalls are located in the gorge Dimosaris. The waterfall is in a beautiful nature and a walk along the streams and lakes is more than worth it. You can walk to the waterfalls from Nidri in 40 minutes. It is a nice walk, take a bottle of water and good shoes are recommended. You can also get there by car, a few hundred meters from the waterfall is a spacious parking space in the forest.
Porto Katsiki is one of the most famous beaches, not only from Lefkas, but from all over Greece.
The contrasts between the white, beautiful high rocks of chalk, up to 200 meters high and white beaches on the one hand and the bright turquoise colors of the sea on the other, are breathtakingly beautiful. Porto Katsiki is one of the destinations on Lefkas that you should not miss. You can reach the beach by car or scooter and you have to do the last part on foot down via stairs.
Before you go down the stairs, walk a little further through the terrace to make the most beautiful picture of the beach and the bay.
