Het bergdorp Metsovo ligt op een hoogte van 1200 m tegen de hellingen van het noordelijke Pindos gebergte tussen Mt. Mavromouni (2160m) en Mt. Peristeri (2295m).

The mountain village of Metsovo lies at an altitude of 1200 m against the slopes of the northern Pindos mountain range between Mt. Mavromouni (2160m) and Mt. Peristeri (2295m).
In het bergachtige gebied komen nog beren voor en volgens sommigen is de naam Metsovo afgeleid van de Slavische woorden “mets” en “ovo” en is de betekenis “dorp van de beren”. De “Alpine” omgeving, bouw van de huizen en de inrichting van de hotels verwacht je meer in Zwitserland en Oostenrijk dan in Griekenland. De typische daken en hobbelige straatjes tonen weer meer overeenkomsten met de Zagoriadorpen.
Igoumenitsa – Metsovo: 115 km
De omgeving en het klimaat hebben in grote mate de manier van leven in Metsovo en omgeving beïnvloedt.
Voornaamste bronnen van inkomsten komen en kwamen grotendeels uit de houtbewerking, veeteelt en transport. Bijzondere meubels met hoge kwaliteit houtsnijwerk, vaten, meubels, bijenkorven etc. worden hier vervaardigd. Je ziet dan ook heel veel winkels die hout bewerkte spullen verkopen.
De laatste jaren wordt ook het langzaam toenemende toerisme een bron van inkomsten, ook het aantal bezoekers in de wintermaanden neemt toe door uitbreidingen van de wintersportfaciliteiten.
Wandel- en natuurliefhebbers kunnen in Metsovo en omgeving hun hart ophalen.
Er zijn veel wandelmogelijkheden, er liggen nog enkele authentieke watermolens en je kunt uiteraard het Nationale Park Valia Kalda met zeldzame flora en fauna bezoeken en het indrukwekkende Aöosmeer.
Bij Metsovo ligt de Katara-pas, dit is de hoogste bergpas van Griekenland.
De Ursa Trail is een wandelpad rond Metsovo en bestaat uit twee routes;
Ursa Trail, 40 km lang en ongeveer 2.700 m hoogteverschil, en het kortere circuit On the Tracks of the Bear, 20 km lang en met 1.050 m hoogteverschil. Het pad is geschikt om bijna het hele jaar door te wandelen (in de winter wel koud!) en er wordt ook jaarlijks een groots hardloopevenement gehouden.
De Ursa Trail loopt langs monumenten en landschappen met een unieke esthetiek en natuurlijke schoonheid. Het pad is schoongemaakt, bewegwijzerd en wordt onderhouden door de Metsovo Atheletic Club en vrijwilligers uit de omgeving.

In de Averoff Katogy winery kun je dagelijks een rondleiding krijgen,
zo kun je zien hoe deze beroemde wijnen worden gemaakt.
Dagelijks geopend van 10:00 tot 16:00 uur.
De laatste tour begint om 15.00 uur.
De 30 minuten durende rondleiding omvat: een bezoek aan de sfeervolle ambiance van de kelders in de historische wijnmakerij Katogi Averoff.
Videoscreenings die de verschillende stadia van wijn maken en de geschiedenis van het landgoed Katogi Averoff illustreren.
Monastery of Agiou Nikolaou
Je kunt in een half uurtje naar dit klooster wandelen via het benedendorp (terug iets zwaarder) of de weg naar Ioannina volgen vanuit het centrum van Metsovo, dan bij het verlaten van het dorp linksaf, net vóór de nationale weg, aan de nauwelijks zichtbare wegwijzer. Dan volgt ongeveer 4 km bochtenwerk. Parkeer je auto op het kleine parkeerterrein aan het einde van de vallei. Dan nog een kwartiertje te voet.
Het klooster werd waarschijnlijk in de 14de eeuw gebouwd en is in 1960 voor het laatst gerestaureerd. De kleine kapel is een juweeltje, helemaal bedekt met fresco’s waarvan de kleuren goed bewaard gebleven zijn.

There are still bears in the mountainous area and according to some the name Metsovo is derived from the Slavic words “mets” and “ovo” and means “village of the bears”. Hiking and nature lovers can indulge themselves in Metsovo and the surrounding area.
There are many hiking opportunities, there are still some authentic water mills and you can of course visit the National Park Valia Kalda with rare flora and fauna and the impressive Aöosmeer.
Near Metsovo is the Katara pass, which is the highest mountain pass in Greece.
The Ursa Trail is a walking path around Metsovo and consists two routes;
Ursa Trail, 40 km long and about 2,700 m difference in altitude, and the shorter track On the Tracks of the Bear, 20 km long and with 1,050 m difference in altitude. The path is suitable for walking almost throughout the year (in the winter it is cold!) And there is also a big running event every year.

Monastery of Agiou Nikolaou
You can walk to this monastery in half an hour via the lower village (back slightly heavier) or follow the road to Ioannina from the center of Metsovo, then leave the village on the left, just before the national road, to the barely visible signpost. Then about 4 km of cornering follows. Park your car in the small parking lot at the end of the valley. Then another fifteen minutes on foot.
The monastery was probably built in the 14th century and was last restored in 1960. The little chapel is a gem, completely covered with frescos whose colors are well preserved.
