Hike from Pila to the hidden aqueduct.
We start in the village of Pila and walk down to the river. The last kilometer we walk through a dried up river bed. It is a bit of climbing and scrambling, but well worth it. Because suddenly you see the aqueduct rising into the river. After a well-deserved break we return the 3.5 km.

When the Turks were defeated in 1571 and the Navarino castle was in ruins, they decided to build a new fortress. This new fortress was built on the Agios Nikolaos mountain in Pylos in 1573. The new fortress or new castle was called Niokastro or Neokastro, the old fortress was no longer called Navarino Castle after the construction of the new castle but Paleokastro, old castle.
It was clear that the water supply was paramount to the fort’s survival. Since there was no water source in the castle, the Ottomans provided the fortress with the necessary aqueduct. It consisted of two different sections supplied with water from two different sources.
The oldest part was provided by the nearby source “Palio Nero” which was located at a distance of 4 km and the newest by the sources “Gouves” over a distance of about 12 km. “Gouves” is located on the plateau of Ag. Demetriou in Chandrinos on a level ~ 220m above the sea.
It is therefore likely that the aqueducts were built at the same time as the Neokastro in 1573. They have been worked on for 70 years and this water supply has been in use for 250 years. Parts of it are still in use by the municipality of Pylos.
