In de omgeving - In the area

The Archaeological Museum is located in the heart of the historic center of Kalamata , where once the municipal authorities the city’s market, a place that buzzes every day from traders and shoppers.

De tentoonstelling is ingedeeld volgens de oude geografische indeling van de prefectuur in vier provincies;
Kalamata, Messene, Pylia, Trifylia.

After the disastrous earthquake in 1986, the market building was demolished because it was badly damaged. The building that replaced the old market was given by the municipality of Kalamata to the Ministry of Culture to become an Archaeological Museum.

The exhibition aims to present the antiquities of Messenia from prehistory to the Byzantine era in the most complete way, so that as a visitor you will get a good overview of the cultural development of each region through the centuries by visiting each exhibition section.

The exhibition is organized according to the old geographical layout of the prefecture in four provinces; Kalamata, Messene, Pylia, Trifylia.
These large geographical sections include the most important archaeological sites and antiques, either from excavations or surface surveys or occasionally from civilians.

To view the exhibition according to these 4 geographical areas, follow the main path.
It winds between the displays and the exhibits in a way reminiscent of the Pamissos River, which runs through a large part of Messenia and invades the Gulf of Messenia.

From the main path paths lead to the four sections, one for each province.
Each section is a self-contained unit and you can choose to view part of the exhibition without following the complete route.

To provide a complete historical overview, both politically and culturally, of the certain areas of ancient Messenia, Ten themes are represented by signposts.
In these themes, history is displayed according to the area in which each event took place.
