De Peloponnesos - The Peloponnese

Kardamili is a picturesque village with beautiful stone houses with ceramic roofs. The village is located in the middle of olive groves, at the foot of the Taygetos Mountains and adjacent to the Mani.

Aan de noordkant bevindt zich een pittoreske haventje;

There is a picturesque harbor on the north side;
very nice to have a drink. In the village itself there are many nice traditional restaurants and kafeneions. The village is one of the nicer villages of the Peloponnese and has an old and new part.
At about two hundred meters from the coast, is the island of Meropi. Here you can see the ruins of an old Venetian wall and the church of Agios Ioannis.

The old part of Kardamili is located above the main street towards the Taygetos Mountains and the new tourist part lower towards the sea.
In old Kardamili you can visit the old residential complex of the Mourtzinos family, one of the leading families from the 17th century. The complex is surrounded by a wall and within the walls is the beautiful Byzantine church of Agios Spyridon.

The first Mani towers can already be found here,
it is the beginning of the Mani region, but the towers are not that high here because, according to reports, the family feuds were still limited.
The rugged cliffs of the Taygetos Mountains continue into the sea at Kardamili and are interrupted by hidden pebble beaches.

Kardamili is a paradise for mountain hikers.
There are many well-marked routes and good route maps are for sale. Just north of Kardamili, 800 meters, the deep Viros gorge begins and continues to the foot of Mount Profitis Ilias (2,407 meters).
Walk through the Viros gorge:
Start in the mountain village of Tzeria, end point Kardamili (or vice versa). The entire walk through the gorge is about 20 kilometers.
