In de omgeving - In the area

Neokastro is just before Pylos
(16 km from Villa FINIKI), has a small entrance and is tucked away in the woods but with great views of the Navarino bay.

In ancient times, a fortress was built at Pylos , the Navarino castle on the Korifasio peninsula next to the Sfaktiria peninsula. When the Turks suffered a defeat in 1571 and the Navarin castle became a ruin, they decided to build a new fortress. This new fortress was built on the Agios Nikolaos mountain in Pylos in 1573. The new fortress or the new castle was called Niokastro or Neokastro, the old fortress was after the construction of the new castle no longer called Navarino Castle but Paleokastro, old castle.

The Neokastro is built directly opposite the island of Pylos and diagonally opposite the island of Sfaktiria. The Sikia strait, the strait between Sfaktiria and Korifasio was closed. The bay between Pylos and the islands Pylos and Sfaktiria remained the Navarino bay and the bay and the islands are now the characteristic image of Pylos.

The Neocastro fortress had five bastions, the Verga bastion was partly destroyed in 1943 during the Second World War. The rectangular Hebdomas bastion gave place to fifteen guns, on the next corner is the rectangular Santa Maria Bastion and then the round Makriyannis Bastion.

The hexagonal citadel that dominated the Neokastro fortress was taken into use after the French Revolution of 1828 as a prison. Since 1976, the institute for underwater archeology has been using the citadel, including a stock of shipwrecks in Greece in ancient times.

Within the walls of the fortress is the Metamorphosis church, also known as the Transfiguration of Christ (Transfiguration), originally the church was a mosque, after the battle of Navarino it became an orthodox church. The church has just been renovated.

A museum has now been established in the former General Maison barrack of Neokastro.
In the museum there are also old maps and drawings of, among other things, the famous naval battle in the bay of Navarino where an allied fleet with 48 ships from the English, French and Russians carrying the Turkish and Egyptian fleet of 84 ships on 27 October 1827 in four hours destroyed time.

On the rock Tsichli Baba, also called island Pylos, stands a lighthouse and a monument of the French. Three memorials are on the southern tip of the Sfaktiria. With a boat one can go on excursion to the rock and the island.
Starting from Neokastro, an aqueduct runs in the direction of Methoni . The long aqueduct was built to supply drinking water to the castle from the sources and the rivers in the area.
